When is the last time
Someone complimented you?
Who? Friend or stranger?

When is the last time
You complimented someone?
Who? Friend or stranger?

Which feels better –
A compliment from a friend
or from a stranger?

When do you speak up
To give out a compliment?
Is it natural?

Or do you have to
Struggle to give compliments?
Do you accept them?

What do you say back?
A simple “Thank You” will do.
Do not disagree.

“Oh, this old sweater?
I’ve had it for a long time.”
Try a humble, “Thanks!”

Speak sincere feelings,
And don’t underestimate
The power of words.

Word Origins & Creative Usage

Where do words come from?

When you google that question,
you realize how new the verb, “google” is!

Of course, you know how that word, Google, originated.
It was those 4 or 5 guys in a garage, right?

But what about the word “zany”?
Where did it originate?

Shakespeare!

Shakespeare had an incredible influence on the English language and invented “zany” – as well as hundreds of other words we still use today.

Here are some of the more than 1,700 words first used in Shakespeare’s writing:

  • amazement
  • bedroom
  • champion
  • dawn
  • eyeball
  • fashionable
  • gossip
  • moonbeam
  • olympian
  • puking
  • swagger
  • unreal
  • zany

Wow! Shakespeare!

William Shakespeare

He was sooooo creative!!
(That’s an understatement)
We’ll never know exactly what Shakespeare looked like,
but many portraits share similar features. This one is a Getty image
.

Here’s an image of Zany Me:

How zany can you get?

You have to “SnapChat” it before you get
those ears and eyelashes – and such smooth skin!
Do you know SnapChat?
It’s one of many programs out there that
help us creatively present ourselves.

Internet Writing Programs

Sometimes we present ourselves visually with doctored images (like the one above).

Do we “doctor” our verbal images of ourselves, too? Microsoft Word is one of many programs in this technological world that allows us to spice up what we say and how we say it. I love using their templates. In addition to Microsoft Word and other well-known programs, I recently discovered Google Docs. Do you know about that app?

I have Google Docs on my iPhone.
Do you use that program to
create and edit documents on the go?
You can “get stuff done”
(how’s that for creative word usage?)
with or without an internet connection.

You can write on your own – or invite more people to contibute.
My granddaughter, Faith, used Google Docs to write her
paternal (DeAngeles) Family History.
Her dad is our son, Ty.
Faith sent the Goodle Doc to me to see and edit.
It’s a great program.

Descriptive Words

Particular words jumped out at me as I read Faith’s geneological study that included health histories of her grandparents, parents, siblings, and aunts/uncles:

  • heart attack
  • valve replacement
  • Valley Fever
  • arthritis
  • cancer
  • diabetis
  • high cholesterol

These medical issues and troublesome words don’t describe the people, or

  • the beauty,
  • the personalities,
  • the faith,
  • stamina,
  • and creativity of the family.

Where do we make sure such characteristics make it to the printed page and live on in history?

Signature Vocabulary

As a writer who has created a blog, YOU can be sure the beauty, the uniqueness, and the zaniness of your personality and your loved ones lives on. You can create a legacy for your family; one that tells more than birth, marriage, children, illnesses and death.

What words might people attribute to YOU? Have you a signature vocabulary? What do you want folks to remember about your family?

Bob

My Precious Husband

My precious husband, Bob, may not have invented the word, “Foo-Foo,” but his use of it for someone’s name is becoming a signature of his.

“You know, help me out, Foo-Foo was just over there by the Wuch-a-me-call-it. You remember!”

Uh, can you help me out a little more! Who and/or where?

He makes me laugh!!
The older we get, the more “Foo-Foos” there are in our lives!

bob-jan

Yes, words are our trademark. Just as identifiable as our fingerprints.

I don’t think I’ve actually invented any words, though. Have you?

Using Words Creatively

Do you use words in unique ways?
My blogging friend, Dorothy (deyspublishing.wordpress.com),
posted today  about pouting clouds.

I said they were pouting and spouting.

Giving animate qualities to inanimate objects is a great use of words. I love the way many poets do that. They attribute people qualities and actions to things in nature… animals, clouds, unfriendly chairs.

My iPhone has a dictionary app that allows me to look at synonyms and antonyms as well as definitions. You probably have that app, too. It’s a great tool for finding ways to creatively use words.

Sharing Creative Writing With Others

In addition to sharing my writing on WordPress, I belong to a writers’ group. We meet every 1st & 3rd Friday. Our first 15 minutes is a Free Write on a topic we draw out of a hat.

Draw out of a Hat

I think when next we meet, we should have a list of original Shakespearean words and see if we can select six (or so) of them to weave into a story – with instructions to try and add one more – an “original” – one of our own.

Doesn’t that sound like fun?

Try it! Share your zany new word with me!

Have a whimsical*, zany weekend!

*Whimsical is a Bob Goff “signature word” in my mind. Have you read his book, Love Does? I highly recommend it. Talk about a “wordsmith!”

13 Ways to Say, “I Love You”

Nothing beats those three little words,
“I Love You!”

But, some folks just have a hard time saying it.
Listen for these other expressions!

Thanks to http://www.IntelligenceForYourLife.com for sharing these!

Which one has your loved one used to tell YOU,
“I love you?”

Bob often stops at the CostCo flower counter
and picks out a lovely bouquet to bring home
when we are out shopping.

Sometimes I order flowers from FTD
to be delivered with a love note from me to him.

Is there one you can add to the list?

I would add,

Wordless Wednesday’s Tanka

Wordless Wednesday

Wednesdays are wordless

According to some bloggers

But how can poets

Contain all the bubbly words

Springing up inside of them?

A tanka is a form of Japanese poetry
that follows a syllable format.
Unlike Haiku with only three lines,
Tankas are composed of 5 lines.
Lines 1 and 3 have 5 syllables.
Lines 2, 4, and 5 contain 7 syllables each.

  • Create fantastic subheads.  So, I created that subheading and your eye was drawn to it, right?
  • Tell a seductive story.

Can I seduce you into sitting a spell and sharing a story with me? One that will draw you in and keep you turning pages?

Cristian wrote: “Start the story with a seductive sentence.”

I have written a memoir. I have not published it yet. It is titled, “All My Marbles.” The beginning sentence is,

“I want you to know that I am a rather strong-willed, sometimes too outspoken, retired career woman who intends to live to be ninety-plus with all my marbles in place.”

Would you be tempted to turn the page? The rest of that first paragraph reads:

“Right up to the last, I want to smell good and wear dangling earrings that match my outfit for the day. I hope my children will get the message that there’s no need to get twitter-pated about getting older. As long as you keep your eyes on the NOW, your sense of humor tuned, and allow your style to be uniquely YOU, it’s likely that (unlike my cantankerous mother), you will wear your shirt right-side-out and still ‘give a shit’ at 89!”

  • Pay attention to the details. The details of my memoir include chapters about each of my seven grandchildren after some introductory chapters titled:

Chapter One –   The Courage of Our Ancestors             8

Chapter Two –   My Parents’ Confidence                        17

Chapter Three – The Wisdom of Bob’s Parents              26

Chapter Four – Love in Us

(Chapter 4 tells about how my husband (of 57 years now) and I met … and how we managed to stay together in spite of a beautiful but rocky start. The details of this chapter include this lovely wedding photo.

    WeddingCake-cropped.JPG

That was 57 years ago, February 11, 1962, and today we are more in love than ever.

Would you be tempted to buy my Memoir if I published “All My Marbles”??

  • In my blog, whose subtitle is “Love One Another,”
I share daily ideas (130 days in a row now) from my life.
    I’ve been blogging since 2012,
but just within the last 130 days I became serious
about making it a daily habit. The Art of Blogging helped me make this commitment.
    Thank you, Cristian and Jason.
  • My life is filled with blessings –
and I pass along tips for how to
fuel your life with blessings, too.

Come to my filling station often.
My heart is overflowing… WITH LOVE TO SPARE.

Sometimes I have to pinch  myself to know this is real.
    But –  – – it is!!

Kind Words

Kind Words

Mother Theresa was the first

who said something like this:

“Kind words can be short

But their echo

Lasts Forever.”

.

  • Come in
  • Thank you
  • You’re welcome
  • I’m sorry
  • You’re forgiven
  • I need you
  • I’m praying for you
  • He hears
  • I’m listening
  • I care
  • I’m here for you
  • Join me
  • I’d love to

.

Can you add to the list?

What kind words

Have you spoken today?

What kind words

Have you heard today?

How did you respond?

Do you hear the echoes?

.

  • Come again soon
  • I love you!

Are We Just “Pissin’ in the Wind”?

My blogging friend, Claudia, posted today questioning the effectiveness of her blog. Essentially, she questioned, “Is anybody reading it? Does it make a difference? What’s my purpose?”

I commented on her blog, writing, “I understand your concern, Claudia. I have some of those same questions, doubts, and frustrations. How many million bloggers are out there? And for what purpose? Is it worth the time? Am I accomplishing anything? My husband says I’m just “pissin’ in the wind!” Well, my response is that every writer is doing likewise unless they have readers who are somehow encouraged, influenced, inspired, entertained, and/or educated by those written words. So, that’s my purpose… to create an audience of readers who are somehow inspired by my words to think, to reflect, to open their eyes to see something differently – and perhaps to be encouraged to reach out in love to one another a little more often, sincerely, and deeply. To know God and to thank Him more often for our many blessings – that’s another focus. But, I know we do those things better face-to-face than we do on social media. So, is my blogging taking away from the face-to-face opportunities? No, it’s late… I wouldn’t be out interacting with others at this hour anyway. Not now. Social media (blogging and FaceBook) help me broaden my reach. Don’t they? Or am I just “pissin’ in the wind?”

What do you think? Do you have a purpose for this writing activity called blogging? Do you feel your blog is accomplishing that? How do you know? Do people read and respond to your shared ideas? Is anybody out there?

Or are we all just “pissin’ in the wind” ??

Music Unites but Words Can Divide

Well, not all words divide. But think about it. Words are divided into different languages and when we don’t understand our neighbors’ words, their “foreign language” divides us.

Music, on the other hand, is universal. A staff of 5 lines with a treble clef or a bass clef on it contains notes that can be understood and played world-wide. The universality of music unites us.

Earlier this week I wrote about how music and words are similar. But today I am contemplating the ways they are different. Take the words away from the music and just play the notes. A guitar speaks universally. A piano has the same black and white keys in Montana or Madagascar. A violin sings the same song in New York or New Guinea.

Tonight I almost missed the chance to publish a blog today. I was too wrapped up in my favorite TV program: The Voice. Why do I love it so much that I tape it so I’m sure I don’t miss an episode? It’s all about the sound. The music. The voice. The judges don’t get to SEE the artist until they decide they like what they hear, and they turn their chair around.

Some artists get no chair turns. He or she could be the world’s most beautiful person, but the music coming out of them is the chair-turning determiner.

A variety of musical genres are represented. Country, jazz, blues, pop, folk. Tonight the ages of the artists ranged from 13 to 40-something. Age is not the determining factor. Music speaks to every heart. We may like the sound or not, but beautiful music unites across all ages, race, gender, religions.

We may have our favorite genre. But we are united in the harmony of sound and the appreciation of a great performance.

Do you tune in to The Voice? If not, do yourself a favor. Stop and listen. Let 13 year-old Kennedy inspire you. Let beautiful Radha amaze you. Fly with “The Clark Kent” of music as you rock to the range of Patrique. This is going to be a great season!

Don’t let the judges bantering words divide you. Let us all be united in awe of the musical talent of these inspiring performers.

Are you with me?

Words and Music

What do words and music have in common?

In this week’s Time magazine, Yo-Yo Ma made several interesting points. “Music is organized sound…” he said. And he continued by adding, “…just as words are organized alphabet.” We could go on to see that writing is organized words, and profound literature is carefully organized thought. Without organization, there would be chaos. Disorganized notes are noise. Words disorganized are meaningless.

Like music, words must be varied to create beauty. In today’s Daily Word devotional, the message said, “… harmony cannot be achieved if we are all singing the same note. When we add our own uniqueness to everything we do, we add depth and meaning.” Our individuality shines through our words, thoughts, and actions, as well as our music.

Music needs all eight notes on the scale and every sharp and flat in between to create great symphonies, exquisite melodies, pleasing harmonies. Likewise, our voices, whether sharp or flat, congruous or dissonant, need to be heard. Our thoughts need to weigh in.

Yo-Yo Ma said our world demands discussion if there ever is hope for harmony. Discussion can resolve discord. Democracy demands discussion. Life demands organized sound, notes of harmony, organized words, civil discourse, if we ever are to have peace.

Ponder those thoughts and join me in prayer: “Almighty Creator, may our words and our music add rich depth and meaning and peace to our world!”

Amen?

Let your words weigh in. Which of your blogs added to peace in our blogging world recently? Is that one of your goals?

Living in One Accord

(Notes from a sermon based on Romans 8:12-17 delivered by Rev. Jean Johnson. Many of you know, to listen more intently, I take notes on Sunday mornings while listening to the message from the pulpit. Sometimes they are recorded in poetry. Last Sunday was one of those times.)

We all are God’s children.

Some call God, “Our Father.”

But, some folks choose to ignore Him.

They balk and say, “Why bother?”

God speaks to us in Romans,

To us who’ve already heard.

It’s not for the unknowing

Who think the Gospel’s absurd.

Those led by God’s Spirit

Are children of our Lord.

We show our Love and faith

By living in One Accord.

To live in One Accord with God,

We worship, study, love, and pray.

Our witness shows The Spirit

At work in us each day.

We’re living out the reality

Of what already is in us.

Be who you already are

Without works or trouble or fuss.

We used to belong to sin,

But Jesus came to the rescue.

We have reason for joy and acceptance.

Isn’t this Good News to you?

We have assurance of this reality –

This adoption is done, signed and sealed.

We sing praises to God, our Father.

Our case clearly has been appealed.

Knowing God as Father is possible

By Christ’s life, His Word, His death.

That evidence is proof enough;

We affirm it with every breath.

I believe in God, The Father,

In Jesus Christ, my loving Lord.

Thank You for Your Saving Grace.

Now, let us live in One Accord.

Amen?
