‘Tis the season for caroling,
A time to spread the joy
Of Christmas and its meaning
To every girl and boy.

So tune your voices, friends,
And get in the Christmas mood.
Join the bundled-up singers, and
Share some holiday food.

Open up your hearts, friends,
And see what you can do
To spread a little Christmas cheer
To more than just a few.

Wash away the loneliness
By spreading infectious smiles.
Let your Christmas joy be genuine
And be felt for miles and miles.

Merry Christmas Season to you!
Be generous and sincere.
Help to keep this season’s light
Shining brightly though out the year.

Skills to Become Employable

img_5468.jpg

Which of these 13 skills do you think are most important?

Our 23-year-old grandson went with us to the Job Corps site in Anaconda, MT yesterday. We’re looking at various options for his future training, education, exploration, and employment. This poster caught my eye.

Are those skills listed in priority order, or would you prioritize them differently?

Are there points on this list that you think are not as important as others?

Are there skills missing from this list that you think should be added?

An instructor of carpentry with whom we spoke yesterday at the job center said, “I can teach students to become a carpenter, but I can’t teach them to work.”

The work ethic is something students have or don’t. Do you believe that?

Santa and Jesus

It’s not enough to display our Santas.

The reason for the season must not be eclipsed by that jolly old man!

Where is the Christ Child in this season of Jolly Old St. Nick and Rudolph?

Keep Christ in Christmas. No Xmas for me! If I have to abbreviate, I write C’mas. Someone once told me that the x translates to Christ in some other language. You think?

Feels like Xing Christ out to me. What do you think?

Santa is a great gift giver… but he’s not the reason for the season. Give God is due, will you?

I Wish You CAVU

I wish you CAVU.

Do you know what CAVU is?

I didn’t until today.

Mike Pence spoke eloquently at George H.W. Bush’s funeral today. I loved his reference to the letter GHW Bush sent last August to Pence’s son. In the letter former President Bush referred to his understanding of Mike Pence’s pride in the accomplishments of his son, and he mentioned his desire for the young Pence to adopt the “CAVU Spirit”.

I had not heard of CAVU before. As a Navy pilot speaking to a young Marine who had recently reached a new pilot’s landmark, each man understood the acronym from a personal perspective.

Like Geo. H.W. Bush’s wish to Mike Pence’s son, I also wish you CAVU today and always:

“Ceiling and visibility unlimited.”

AMEN

Do You Trust the Future?

If someone asked you this question,
“Do you trust the future?”
what would you say?

Have you thought of YOUR answer?

How would I answer that question?

I would say something I have heard others say…
It’s not original… I don’t know who first said it,
but I would answer,
“I don’t know what the future holds, but I know WHO holds the future.”

Since I trust our Creator,
I have to trust the future.
Our future is in the hand of God…
and God don’t make no mistakes!

Our 41st president, George H.W. Bush (1924-2018), died yesterday,
He served in office from 1989-1993.
He was asked the question, “Do you trust the future?”

Here is his answer:

“… I do not mistrust the future. I do not fear what is ahead. For our problems are large, but our heart is larger. Our challenges are great, but our will is greater. And if our flaws are endless, God’s love is truly boundless.”

Tell me what you would answer if someone asked you,
“Do you trust the future?”

What is Love?

What do we mean when we say, “I love you?”

Is it the same as “Love One Another” (my blog sub-heading)?

In a discussion with my 23-year-old grandson about our cultural use of the word LOVE in the English language, I shared with him that we do ourselves a disservice by having only one word for love. In the Ancient Greek culture, there are six words for love.

“What are they?” Chris asked.

Of course, I couldn’t come up with them from the top of my head, so I went to the web and googled it. From “YesMagazine” on-line – Building a Better World – I found my answer in an article titled, Ideas on the Definition of LOVE from the Greek perspective.

You may already know all this, but maybe, like me, you can’t pop the answer up from your vast memory bank. Here’s a refresher… and a reminder of the types of love our world sorely lacks today (my biased opinion there, of course).

Passionate Love

Eros  – sexual passion; named after the Greek god of fertility. It represented the idea of sexual passion and desire.

Comradely Friendship

Philia  – deep friendship; valued far more by the Greeks than the base sexuality of eros. Philia developed between brothers in arms who fought side-by-side on the battlefield. It is about showing loyalty for your friends, sacrificing for them, as well as freely sharing your emotions with them.

Playful Love

Ludus  – playful love; it’s the playful affection between children, the flirting and teasing of teens and young adults, the bantering and laughing of friends socializing or out dancing.

Selfless Love

Agape   – love for everyone; selfless love, extended to all people, whether family members or distant strangers. Agape was translated into Latin as “caritas” from which our word charity was derived.

Long-standing Love

Pragma  – long-standing love; mature, realistic love that is commonly found among long-established couples. Pragma is about making compromises to help the relationship work over time, showing patience and tolerance.

Self-Love

Philautia  -love of self;  not excessive self-love in the unhealthy form of narcissism, but the healthy version enhanced by a wider capacity to love. If you like yourself and feel secure in yourself, you will have plenty of love to give others.

And which of those types of love
do you think we need to expand
most in our world today?

I would say both AGAPE and PRAGMA.

Out of those loves true fellowship can grow and thrive.

Here are five of my high school buddies. How I wish I could have been in fellowship with them when this photo was taken. I PRAGMA these guys!!

Today is the first day of Advent. It is the Christian weeks of waiting. Waiting for the promised Messiah. Waiting for Christ’s Mass – Christmas, the birth of our Savior. During Advent we are reminded to become more quiet. “Be still and know that I am God.”

Cherish your loves, your friends, your fellowship with others, and give of your heart to those in need. Prepare for the coming of God’s Son. Prepare by living your best Agape and Pragma self! Be in fellowship with other Christians and with those who need these attributes Rick Warren lists below. Be with others who are seeking and waiting, learning and growing.

According to Rick Warren in his book, The Purpose Driven Life, “Genuine fellowship includes authenticity, mutuality, sympathy, mercy, honesty, humility, courtesy, confidentiality, and frequency.” (Page 151)

Purple “Ladies” Volunteer

Do you enjoy volunteering? I do!

“Whenever you’re giving, it’s like a gift to yourself.” This is a quote from Sanaa Latham, actress, as quoted in my December Guideposts devotional on The Upside page.

At our local medical center, the “Candy Stripers” are not young high schoolers dressed in red and white stripes or pink tunics  (as they were back in CA) who greet you from the reception desk. They are mature women with a heart for helping who wear purple jackets.

Look carefully at the last picture. I am third from the left in the back row. Notice the donation we made to the hospital. We gave $31,700 !! The money went to help pay for that diagnostic scanning machine that I used yesterday! Our big fund raiser each year is an Open House tour of six different homes (our house was on tour about 10 years ago shortly after we moved here to Ennis, MT). The fund raiser also includes a collection of silent auction items and donated events. God bless those dedicated workers and donors who make it all happen every year!

As I indicated, yesterday I had a scan … a CT scan… (a follow-up on the irregularities found in Wednesday’s ultrasound).

Yesterday also was my day to be a “Purple Lady” volunteering at the reception desk. So, since I couldn’t be two places at once, I needed a substitute for about an hour and a half.

But, Friday afternoons are not a good time to try to find subs … especially with that snowy, cold weather going on out there.

So, what did I do? I conned my husband, Bob, and grandson, Chris,
into covering for me. (Actually they volunteered – what nice guys!)

I wish you could have seen the expressions of staff and visitors
when they came in and saw these “Purple Ladies!”
Priceless!!

I don’t believe what I’m seeing!!

Hey, why not?

We take volunteers of all kinds! Come on over, guys!

Thanks, guys! Get off your ATVs and out of your fishing boats,
and perform a little community service!
It’s not just the Lion’s Club that needs you.

We’d be happy to add some men to
our Madison Valley Medical Center Auxiliary!

Remember, especially during this gift-giving time of year,
Whenever you’re giving, it’s like a gift to yourself.”
