U = Unity

Day #21 in the A-Z series”What Makes Me Happy?”

Unity

We are one nation

United under one God

Let’s behave as One

Yes, today is Election Day –

Mid-term elections in the USA.

Time to cast our ballots,

Make our political choices,

And then live in unity.

Let’s work together for

The common good of us all.

There’s nothing like
Unity to make
Me happy.

What’s the “U word” that brings U joy?

T = Trust

Day #20 – T = Trust

It’s been quite a ride! My A-Z series on “What Makes Me Happy?” Is drawing near an end, but today I TRUST you’ll continue reading, and I’ll continue to be inspired with new, pertinent topics. Thank you for being here. The ability to TRUST makes me happy 😃

T rusting brings

R espect and

U nderstanding and

S afety to vulnerability

T rusting is essential

In a world where parents feel a need to teach their children NOT to trust, we must be the models of trustworthiness. We must exude the love šŸ’• and safety we wish covered the earth.

The opposite of trusting is mistrusting, of course, and that creates worry and anxiety. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could feel free as a people to just trust? To just teach trust?

It’s probably Pollyanna thinking… unrealistic, you say. But, can’t we teach caution without teaching fear? Without causing worry and anxiety?

My go-to guide is Scripture. Jesus shows us the way. He talks about the birds being clothed so splendidly, so why worry about what we’ll wear. He showed us how He fed the multitudes, and told us not to worry about where our next meal is coming from. “Do not fear,” He taught us.

Philippians 4:6-7 is Paul’s message to the people of Philippi in which he cautioned them about worry. “Don’t worry about anything;” he wrote, “instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

So, the way to live in TRUST is to read, study, and apply the TRUTH of Scripture. Trust in God. Trust in what Jesus taught us. Sounds simple, huh? No, it’s not.

In today’s world we worry about safety. We hear of innocent people being murdered all the time.

In today’s world we worry about international affairs, divisiveness, wars, prejudice, and how it’s tearing us apart. We feel helpless to create that peace Paul wrote about. God’s Peace. Where is it? How can we exude it? How can we be the change we want to see in this world? How can we trust those people and situations that seem so untrustworthy?

My only solution is to remember the words of Paul, “Pray about everything.”

And remember/think about the words that remind us of how our simplest acts can make a difference to those we touch… and to those whose lives are affected by what we do.

R. Buckminster Fuller wrote, “Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.

Like tomorrow, if you’re in the USA, we can each make a difference. Go vote (if you haven’t cast an absentee ballot already). Every vote DOES matter!

Reach out to your neighbor in love. Reach out with help to a friend in need. Reach out to a fellow blogger with affirmation. Tell them that the words you just read made a difference for you. They resonated. Trust that your small acts add up to big differences.

Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. In your shared weakness, you exhibit trust and you strengthen others.

Just TRUST!

He’s gotcha in the palm of His hand. Here’s my mantle in this season of Thanksgiving. Ā Remember to thank God for all the ways He loves and protects you. Trust Him!

May the peace of Christ that surpasses all human understanding be yours today.

Alphabet Haiku – R

Red rooster rouses

Raucus rain rattles rafters

Roota roodle roo!

I enjoy participating in the Alphabet Haiku Challenges.

Here are Haiku Basics:

  1. It is a 3-line poem that records the essence of a single moment in nature (i.e. a leaf falling from the tree).
  2. When written in English, it generally follows the syllabic pattern 5-7-5, although the rule is that it may have 17 syllables or LESS. When straying from the 5-7-5, the center line should still be longer than the first and last.
  3. It is untitled (but I title mine for the sake of reference).
  4. It is unrhymed.

Alphabet Haiku

The Alphabet Haiku adds one more rule to the ones listed above:

  • Every word in the haiku must begin with the same letter.

S = Sunshine

Day #19 in the A-Z series of “What Makes Me Happy?”

SUNSHINE

You expected that would be my S word, didn’t you?

I mean, just look at my header up there!

Yes, sunshine makes me happy!

But look out there this morning…

Sunshine’s late today

Get up? But it’s still dark out!

Daylight saving’s time

.

I’m not a fan of dark, rainy mornings.

Sunshine, Light, and Love make me happy.

But on dark and rainy days like this one,

The other S word that makes me happy

Is SOUP!

Ah yes, I think I’ll go

Get a crockpot started now.

What’s your happy S word?

And what’s your favorite soup?

Here’s the recipe for the one I’ll have simmering

while I’m in church on this otherwise gloomy Sunday.

I won’t do the on-the-stove method suggested here:

This is the cookbook in which I found that nice, simple recipe. It’s a great book:

I had some leeks from a neighbors garden that needed to be used.

Great way to do so, don’t you think?

Ah yes, homemade soup makes me happy!

Cheer me up with a recipe and an S word of your own!

R = Rainbows

Day #18 in the A-Z series on “What Makes Me Happy?”

RAINBOWS

Whenever I see

A sweet rainbow in the sky

I remember God

img_1987

Rainbows are God’s promise

To preserve us and this land

To keep us from total destruction

To hold us in His hand.

.

What could make me happier

Than sunshine after rain?

Sunshine that brings rainbows

And invites me to come out again?

.

“Come out” has brand new meaning

But it applies to one and all:

Be exactly who you’re made to be

As you live God’s rainbow call.

Sour high in love unending.

Keep the promises you make.

Let the Holy Spirit guide

Each venture that you take.

.

Be the promise of endurance.

Lift up others as you soar

To the heights set out before you.

Love your neighbors … love them more!

Your turn:

What’s the “R” word that makes YOU happy?

Q = Quirkiness

Day #17 in my A-Z series on “What Makes Me Happy?”

QUIRKINESS

I like different folks

Not afraid to be quirky

Stand out in the crowd

There is nothing ordinary about my three Swiss grandsons! You just saw the namesake of one of them… and then you met my youngest one … the sushi guy. Both are Christian. But, no, I’m not sure about the Christ-like part. They are named Christian … the first crazy guy was our Swiss AFS exchange student in 1980-81. Our daughter married his first cousin – and later named her third son after him.

Now, before you start judging all those unusual and zany folks, just remember, “We’re all a quirky work in progress.”

Jesus ain’t finished with us yet! And He was a little quirky, too, don’tcha think? Water into wine? Who’d ever done THAT before??

Walking on water?

How quirky can you get?

Such quirkiness is challenging. Folks who are different sometimes want to fit in.

That can be hard. And sometimes heartbreaking! But I say, “Embrace your differences! Celebrate quirkiness!”

Here are all three of those Swiss grandsons. Each is unique. Each is a little quirky in his own way.

Quirkiness makes me happy. It makes the world go round.

What’s quirky about you? Do you love it?? God made you unique.

Just remember, He don’t make no junk!! 🤪

Sixty-Four Years

SIXTY-FOUR YEARS
(a heptameter)

No, this “old coot” (who may have a wonderful sense of humor locked inside, by the way) is not sixty-four. He’s much older… and he reminds me of the subject of the poem below.

It’s a seven-syllable poem. I read somewhere, “Seven-syllable lines in English verse can have several different names.” I call mine heptameter. I heard that somewhere. I didn’t make it up.

Seven syllables on each line… a true story here… first published in our
Madison County Writers Anthology for the year. The subject was a 96-year-old for whom I was a senior companion. He was a hoot of an old coot!

Sixty-four Years

a heptameter

The poem rings a loneliness bell, doesn’t it? Ah, but he loved company and he had a million stories locked inside, aching to be told.

Do you know a senior who lives alone? Why not decide to visit today – or give him/her a call.

By the way, doing a little research with Siri, I learned that in English poetry, you only count syllables in Haiku (a form borrowed from another language, of course)… not usually in other poetry forms. Other languages, like French, count syllables in most forms of poetry. The reason English poems don’t was explained this way: English is a stress-timed language, and French is a syllable-timed language. This means that in English, the number of stressed syllables in a line is generally more important than the total number of syllables … (and besides, depending upon what part of the country you’re from, the syllables differ … y’all relate, raught?)

Nevertheless, it was fun to write my Heptameter. You should try it. It’s fun!

P = Positivity

Day #16 of my A-Z series on “What Makes Me Happy?”

POSITIVITY

I played with words that start with “P”
– like PUPPIES and PALM Springs.

I contemplated P words
and all the joy PEACE brings.

I thought about the POWER of PRAYER,

But then I gave more thought to
What makes me happy through and through,
And decided on POSITIVITY.
