Letting My Feelings Out

Al Rocker, the Today Show weatherman and co-host was featured this month on the cover of one of the magazines I read each month, “Guideposts.” On turning 70, he shared with readers how he is approaching life differently after a 2022 health scare.

He wrote:

“It may sound strange, considering I make my living on television and have been the weatherman and co-host of the Today show for 29 years, but in my personal life, I shy away from the spotlight. I’d musch rather celebrate someone else, make a big deal out of their birthday instead of my own.
Which is why I tried my best to dissuade my wife, Deborah Roberts, from throwing a party for my birthday last August. But I knew I couldn’t stop her. It was a milestone birthday, after all – my seventieth.
The truth was, I was feeling a little melancholy about turning seventy. My dad never made it to this age. He passed away at 69. Dad was my role model and inspiration for being a good husband and father. I was theoldest of six kids, and three of my siblings were adopeted, Mom and Dad brought foster children into our home, too. Sometimes people would ask why they’d taken on raising so maky children, and Dad would always say simply, “There is no limit to how much you can love.”

After describing his near-death experience, he concluded:

“My health scare reminded me that life is an ephemeral gift that we’ve been given by God, and we need to appreciate and honor it. So I spent a lot of time talking to people… telling them how I feel about them. The people I care about, the people I love, I want to make sure they know. I’ve been more intentional about that, evn after I made a full recovery and returned to the Today show.”

I challenge each of us to commit to this same message. Let your feelings out! Let the people you love, the people you care about, KNOW! Be intentional!!

JanBeek

Memorable Road Trip

Think back on your most memorable road trip.

I don’t have to think back

My most memorable road trip was in January this year 2024 … but now in Nov. 2024 is hard to beat!

Back in January, our son and daughter-in-law

loaned us their car for this trip.

We were so happy to be in

sunny California instead of home

In Montana right then … and the same is true now! We are happy to be in Switzerland on this Election Day ‘24 in the USA. It is so contentious there!

Back in January:

It was -23 and felt even colder with the windchill factor back home today. We were in Paso Robles, CA then with the sunny skies that were perfect for enjoyable wine tasting opportunities. The same is true now. Time with friends is what made that and this road trip so memorable, so special, so much fun!!

Our son-in-law, André, is a wine connoisseur!

Wish you could have joined us!

Sculpterra Winery

was filled with amazing sculptures.

You would have oogled and ogled

just as I did!!

Bruce, our wine guide,

poured some delicious tastings for us.

This was one of my favorites.

As a retired beekeeper,

Bob was especially interested

in their display of honeybee products.

Meantime, back in Montana,

the cold spell continues …

and we’re grateful our road trip

doesn’t involve driving there right now.

If you’re in the pattern

of this Arctic storm

with its sun-zero temps,

Escape now!!

Come join us!

We didn’t mind the 80’s plus folks…

And we’re loving the 70’s weather here in Switzerland 🇨🇭

We’re young at heart!!

Love,

JanBeek

Join or Start a Writers’ Group

Do you belong to a Writers’ Group?
If not, is there one in your area?
If not, how about starting one?

We had Writers of Madison County
alive and well when Bob & I moved here
back in 2006. I joined in 2007.
We published an anthology each year.

Over the years members moved away
or some of the older ones left this earth.
By the time of the Pandemic,
we were no longer publishing
– and so the group disbanded.

Then this year a friend asked me,
“Why don’t you start the group again?”
I contacted our local bank
where we’d been meeting
and they graciously gave us
their Fireside Room to use twice a month.

I contacted the local newspaper
and they put our meetings in the
news calendar every 1st & 3rd Friday.
Our group is small (averaging 4 to 6),
but we hope to grow…
and we are enjoying the sharing.

Last week there were four of us.
We began with a 15 minute “Free Write”
on a topic suggested by a new member:
“Getting Ready for Winter”

We wrote for 15 minutes and then
shared orally what we had written.
Feedback was spontaneous and encouraging.
The others wrote fictional short stories or personal reflections.
I wrote this poem:

Winter Comes Too Early

Winter comes too early
And it lasts too long.
When God created seasons,
He got it all so wrong!

The seasons should be equal:
Spring summer winter fall.
Each has its own beauty.
I really love them all.

But here in Montana
Winter comes too soon.
We barely get a summer
When we see the autumn moon.

The leaves turn gorgeous golden.
The wildflowers die on the vine.
The frost kills the mosquitoes.
But what joy is left is mine.

I take joy in getting ready
For winter’s cold but glorious snow,
Begging neighbors to be willing
To plow us out, you know?

Winter boots and jackets
Come forward in the space
Where sandals and sundresses
Once occupied that place.

Family in California
Invite us to take a break.
Prepare for winter travel.
Call – and reservations make.

So, enjoy what little autumn
We are fortunate to see,
Because before you are ready,
Winter’s here for you and me.

Sleigh bells ring and children gather
Near the fireplace to hear
Reindeer bells and Ho-ho-ho’s.
Are you ready? Winter’s near!

My friends complimented my ability to produce a poem in that brief fifteen minute period. But, for me, writing poetry is as easy (if not easier) than prose. I thank my mom for that. She loved poetry. Even though she didn’t write it, she collected it, memorized it, shared it. And I was the grateful, eager recipient.

Where did your love of writing originate? What kind of writing is most fun for you? Do you have a group with whom to share it? If so, good for you! If not, why not start a writers’ group in your neighborhood, town or city?

Love to you,
JanBeek

So, slow down your speech
Speak a little louder, please
Bob wants to hear you!

It’s so frustrating
When he catches only half
Of conversations

Someone should invent
Hearing aids that really work
They’d make a billion

How can I hear you
Knock three times on the ceiling
Or twice on the pipes

If my ears aren’t working?

What fun that old song is!
I just had to include it here…
Listen if you can!

One Word

Daily writing prompt
What is one word that describes you?

No way!
No way can
One word describe
Me
or You!

We are waaay more complex than that.
Don’t you agree?

Take a look…
Can you come up with one word?

How about YOU?
A single word?
I doubt it!

Middle Names

Daily writing prompt
What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

My middle name is Laura.
I was named after one of my dad’s sisters (Aunt Laura).
Twenty-one years later,
it ended up being the name
of my mother-in-law
(Laura Belle).
And eight years later,
we named our daughter DeAna Laura.

The name Laura is the feminized form of laurus, Latin for “bay laurel plant”, which in the Greco-Roman era was used as a symbol of victory, honor or fame. The name represents the embodiment of victory and strength.

In British North America, the name Laura reached 17th most popular in 1880 and 1882, but dropped to #43 in 1899. It was among the top 50 names for female newborns for much of the early 20th century in the United States, but dropped to No. 100–120 between 1930 and 1950; reached No. 10 in 1969, and has since steadily decreased in popularity.

In Europe, Laura remains popular.
In 2009 it ranked within the top 10
in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia,
Greenland, Luxembourg, Spain, and Switzerland.

(Isn’t that interesting, given the fact that
DeAna Laura now lives in Switzerland?)

Here is my mother-in-law, Laura Belle
with our daughter, DeAna Laura.
(That was almost 50 years ago!)
Two very precious ladies
of victory and strength!

What is your middle name?
And what significance does it have?

Cheers to you
from Janet Laura & DeAna Laura

Music Lifts

Nothing lifts my spirits more than beautiful music. Do you want to be lifted up this day? Click on this link. Goose bumps guaranteed!!

youtu.be/2esOJcVEhL0

I hope that link opened for you – and I hope you were inspired to sing along!

What does the Bible say about singing?

Singing is part of our human experience. Songs have been used to express some of the deepest human joys and sorrows from the beginning of time. Of course, the Bible has a lot to say about music and singing. You may wonder what God thinks about that toe tapping song you sing every Sunday morning. What does the Bible actually say about singing? Here are a couple of m favorite scriptures:

Psalm 71:23

“My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.”

Psalm 105:2

“Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!”

Do go back up to that youtube link, if you didn’t click on it before… and this time, do sing along!
Nothing will lift your spirits quite like that! Sing to the Lord… He’ll lift you up and you’ll smile in spite of yourself. Really!! Try it!

Sending Love
and happy songs your way,
JanBeek
