Embrace Silence

Today was a day to embrace silence.
Put away the TV rhetoric.
Turn off the music and chatter.
Just listen to the silence.

Back in 2017 I wrote about silence.
Time to resurrect that post:

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

Silence is resounding in my ears.
Silence wipes away confusion and fears.
Silence speaks as all nature rings.
Silence breaks as songbird sings.

Silence whispers compassion’s song –
Let’s me contemplate yesterday’s wrong.
Allows God’s grace to fill this space
Instead of wallowing in my own disgrace.

Silence brings new life to God’s Word.
It lets the Holy Spirit speak and be heard.
It opens my heart to name the nameless
And enter their world blameless and shameless.

Open my heart, Lord, in silence to know
All that You’re saying, all that You show
Through challenges booming or hugs soft and sweet.
Help me to hear You in ALL that I meet.

Press Mute!

Do you have a mute button?

Do you know when to be quiet?

Is there a time when silence is needed?

Oh my, those are such important questions!
When I was in second grade, my teacher wrote on my report card,
“Janet must learn she can’t talk ALL the time!”

Contemplate Silence

While I was up in my sanctuary this morning, that subject of the mute button was raised by one of the writers of a devotional. I contemplated the importance of silence.

I was reminded of my mom’s frequent cautionary quote,

“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool,
than to speak and remove all doubt.”

I’m sure that wasn’t invented by her!
But I attribute it to her.
And it is reinforced when I read in the Bible,

Proverbs 17:28

“Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise;
When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.”

So, I pressed my mute button and sat in God’s presence without a word. Not easy for me… but I am cautioned often to practice the art of holding my tongue. And as I did so, this poem came to me:

Intention

Intention creates reality –
What do I intend to do today?
I set a goal to be loving
In everything I do and say.

Intention creates awareness –
I realize opportunities are near.
I want to do with grateful focus
The work that God has shown me here.

Intention creates commitment –
I’m determined to do His will.
But first I’ll read His Word and listen;
To hear His voice, I must be still.

Press mute!
Shhhh!!

Start Sunday Silently

Silent Sunday

Enjoy Today!

If you are not with “your children” today,
you can substitute  “your children” for “your spouse”
or “your neighbors” or “yourself.”
Change “they” to “you” or “s/he”…

Enjoy Today

Ponder these thoughts –
Go somewhere to worship God today –
Pray –
Enjoy your loved ones.

I’ll be singing in the choir this morning
and listening carefully to the
message presented by Rev. Hundley.

Come back in about 5 hours for my sermon notes.

Have a beautiful Sunday.

Disciples in the Desert

Walking On the Sand

Today I am putting on
a purple shirt of majesty.
I am walking through the desert
As a queen in her sand castle.

Walk with me!
Enjoy the desert beauty.

The clear blue sky is my ceiling.
The palm trees stand like
guardian statues on the path –
Majestic and serene.

Shadows fall from the sun
setting behind the graceful fronds.
I will examine the trees’ trunks,
seeing a text of eternity.

I’ll consider the roadrunners
as students of our January summer.
I will scour the sky for signs
as if my future were written upon it.

I will walk with my best friend
in mutual silence;
Disciples in the desert,
in praise of its mysteries.

Time to go.

I’ll be back.
