Some people seem to have aged like fine wine. I aged like milk…. I got sour and chunky.
Is 82 old? I’ve spent my life and my blogging career (over a decade now) denying “old” and encouraging vim & vigor!
Now, all of a sudden, as I nurse my bruised and broken left hand, try to type with one hand, and I struggle to cut my pain meds in half so I can welcome normal bowel movements again, I am feeling sour, chunky, and sorry for myself. Ever been there?
I have blogged only once or twice in the weeks since my careless trip over the curb and my broken and dislocated left pinky. I try to make light of it.
But I challenge you: Tie your non-dominant hand to your waist. Make it inoperable/immobile. Then leave it like that for two weeks. Try taking a shower, washing your hair, changing the sheets on your bed, slicing meat for a stir-fry, putting on socks, or pulling up your pants. How’s it working?
Believe me, it’s worse than having a finger in a trap! The whole arm and hand are out of commission!
But… true to form, I find comfort in knowing it could be worse!
I drink a toast to the blessings! It coulda been worse! It coulda been the dominant hand or the head or a hip! It coulda been permanent damage. This, too, shall pass!!
So, after all, count your blessings, Jan; you had just gotten a manicure – and you didn’t even break a nail! Now I ask you, how lucky can you be?
Happy Cinco de Mayo came and went! Our granddaughter’s birthday came and went! Mother’s Day came and went! Neighbors and friends came and are still coming to help with meals and household chores. So, I’m smiling and grateful.
I’m aging pretty well! Don’t you think? How about you?
See ya tomorrow, God willing…
Have a Terrific Tuesday.
I send my love,
Guess what? Looking on the bright side and putting on a happy face is NOT the end of your generation!!

Such a cheerful post, Jan. I can identify with much of you challenge paragraph. Ever since I fell in the garden last November there have been movements I cannot do with my right shoulder – I still can’t put on a T shirt; even typing is painful – but I won’t stop 🙂
Good for you! Tenacity and endurance – two essential characteristics of a fruitful life! 🙏🏽❤️
Good for you! Hang in there and don’t stop! You’re an inspiration!?
That was supposed to be an exclamation point, not a question mark!
You’re a beautiful woman! 🥰
I’m so glad you weren’t hurt WORSE! 🙏🙏🙏 I love you! I’m so thankful for your friends and neighbors to help you and daddy out now. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, DeDe. Me, too – sooo grateful! Love and prayers to you 👍🏽❤️🙏🏽 Enjoy your trip and bee 🐝 safe!!
Well all I can say dearest Jan I hope I am still blogging at your age and looking as well as you do my friend..
It isn’t until we can’t do something such as you say with your hand, just how blessed we are.. And you seem double blessed with your willing family and friends who are all pulling together in helping you cope with your one hand ..
Sending you lots of love and healing well wishes Jan .. <3
It makes me all the more appreciative of what I DO have that works and gives me renewed admiration for folks who have lost a limb in war – or folks like Joni Earikson (sp?) Tata who are paralyzed but who continue to thrive and serve!
Exactly being in gratitude for all our blessing Jan.. Have a beautiful day. 💕
Have a lovely day, Sue. We finally have a day that is blue sky and no wind, so it looks like spring! But it’s deceptive. It is 26 degrees out there! Praying for warmer days, but grateful for our warm home. What’s it like where you are?
Today Jan we had a full day of rain, not unusual for England you might say. But we are in need of rain as we must have gone six weeks without a good downpour and our allotments were in need, and its saved us carrying water.
It’s about average temps here for May today it was 13 Celsius,
It’s 5pm now and the sun only just beginning to shine,
But it’s promising sunny tomorrow.. Hope so as I’ve got some transplanting to do tomorrow and the rain today just perfect in preparing ground..
Gratitude in all things 🙏 😊💕
You are amazing and your positivity is contagious. It stinks to have your dominant hand out of commission, but it could’ve been worse (which is a scary thing to think about). God has blessed you with helpful friends and neighbors. Praying you have a speedy recovery. And to your question, you are aging beautifully!
What a sweet & thoughtful response! Thank you so much!!
I have not been as active here, dear Lady Jan, but I came to check how you’re doing. So glad to see that smile on your face, despite the pain and discomfort you’re going through. Hope to be half as graceful as you are when/if I touch 82. 🙂
Hi Kanika! Thank you for your upbeat comment. I needed your cheer today! Thanks for checking in. I’m hangin’ in there!
You are looking great. i think we are both aging very well. I am getting more mobile every day. Do my p.t. exercises every day. i am hoping for a very good report when I go to Mayo on the May 25th. Bill has been ill with a sore throat but doing much better. No covid thank goodness. Are you going to Switzerland for your grandsons wedding soon? Hugs and prayers Love you guys
Oh, you are going soon, Marcia. I am so glad you’re progressing so well. Hugs to Bill. Sending healing prayers. Our Swiss trip isn’t til end of August. Thank God! That gives me time to heal.
I think you are aging better than most! This too shall pass. You are trading a little set back and inconvenience for a chance to realize how many folks care for you and love. A living affirmation of your significance to them. Enjoy it! Glad you are on the mend. Take care!
Thank you for your kind response.
Catching up to this post, and your spirit shines with the brightest of light. While my upper extremeties never experienced a major injury, in the 8th grade I broke my foot playing basketball. “Ouch” didn’t describe my disappointment with being anchored down with crutches. Thank goodness the doctor didn’t need to cast my “ballerina” fracture (his words). Praying for your continuing healing, and may the Lord fill your spirit with His mercy. Blessings to you and Bob.
Thank you, Richard. I appreciate your healing thoughts. The swelling is down some this morning. 👌🏽
Wonderful Jan! Hang in there, your progress is looking good.
Little by little! 👌🏽
I have been thinking about that often … how to age well. You are aging beautifully, such an example to us all.
I am so glad that you have such great friends to count.
