Advice to Teenage Self

WordPress started a new program called Bloganuary each day they’ll give us a writing prompt. I’ll see if I can find inspiration in this new program – and share comments with some fellow bloggers I haven’t met before.

My 2021 blogs all began with my word for the year, “Embrace.” We had spent 2020 with the absence of hugs … and that was really hard for me. It was not difficult to think of a subject to embrace each day.

Our daughter, De, at age 19.

Now, let’s see what my life experience can do with these new daily prompts!

What Advice Would I Give to My Teenage Self?

I wrote a poem for my daughter, DeAna, when she was 19, married her sweetheart, André, and left us in CA to go live with him in his home country of Switzerland. My advice to her was wrapped up in this poem. It’s the same advice I would have given to my own teenage self:

I hope you are able to read that, dear blogging friends. And I hope you have been given (and can give in return) “Gifts Your Kids Can’t Break”

God bless you this New Year’s Day. May 2022 be a memorable year of many hugs and many blessings from Our Lord to you and your loved ones.

Please pray for my husband, Bob, who is in ER right now with congestive heart failure.

Love, JanBeek

  1. In honour of those whose shoulders we stand on – and with prayers for you and your husband.

  2. Happy new year!

    • Thank you. It has started off with quite a challenge, but the nurses and doctors have been marvelous, so it will get better with each day. Thank you for your good wishes!

  3. I posted that from my cell phone while in Bob’s hospital room. Let me go now and edit it… I see things that I could not see on the small phone screen!!

  4. NOT a good way to start 2022 with a trip to the ER! I pray bigtime that daddy is sent home today feeling much better. Btw, that photo of me was taken at Zuzu’s wedding on August 10, 1985, two weeks before my 18th bday. That was a very very memorable evening! That’s when I started truly falling in love with André and he kissed me for the first time. I dearly hope 2022 keeps getting better and better for you and daddy. Hang in there! I love you! 💋💋💋

  5. Btw, I adore that poem. I hope I’ve helped instill gifts like those in my own children….thanks to the ones I was given from you and daddy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  6. Our prayers are with you both. XXX

  7. What a beautiful poem for your daughter, Jan. Such good words of love and wisdom!

  8. Such a sweet, heart touching poem!
Here’s hoping your husband recovers soon 🤞

What a wonderful poem to DeDe! I don’t think I’ve ever read it before. I could certainly write a book of advice I could give to my teenage self if I had the chance. I just try to pass forward the wonderful teachings and examples that I learned from wonderful people in my life, like you and my mother and my best buddy and so many others.

  10. What a lovely poem coming from the heart. Wishing Bob the best.
